In the winter of 2020, a young White man's life was cut short in Overland Park, Kansas, during a violent encounter that began with a planned firearm transaction. Patrick Miller, an 18-year-old male from Bonner Springs, had arranged to purchase a firearm from Joseph Decelles and his friend on the evening of January 25th. However, Miller had confided in others that his actual intention was to rob the sellers of the weapon.
The meeting took place in the 7800 block of Marty Street, where
Miller and a friend arrived, both armed. The situation quickly escalated when Miller struck Decelles' friend with his firearm, leading to a physical altercation. The fight was so intense that the young men tumbled over a balcony at the apartment complex, continuing their struggle on the ground below. It was then that Decelles, who was 17 at the time, fired a gun, shooting Miller.
When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they found Miller with a gunshot wound. In an effort to get him to medical personnel quickly, officers moved him to the parking lot. Tragically, it was later discovered that Miller had also sustained a broken neck and a severed spinal cord. It remains unclear whether this fatal injury was a result of the fall from the balcony or the subsequent fall after being shot. Patrick Miller was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initially, police searched for a suspect described as a white male in his late teens. Their investigation led them to Joseph Decelles. Decelles, who had no prior criminal record, was charged in connection with Miller's death. He later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. In May 2022, a Johnson County judge sentenced Joseph Decelles, then 20 years old, to four years and seven months in prison for his role in the death of Patrick Miller.
