In the early evening of July 25, 2016, a burst of gunfire shattered the summer calm on a street in Kansas City, Kansas, leaving a man for dead. That man was Tyrone L. Wilson, a 42-year-old Black / African American male, whose life was cut tragically short. Police were called to the scene just before 6:30 p.m. in the 400 block of Parallel Avenue, where they found Wilson outside an apartment complex with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial investigations into the homicide painted a tense picture of Wilson's final moments. Witnesses reported that Wilson had been involved in an altercation with another individual shortly before the fatal shots were fired. In the immediate aftermath, a man, described as being in his late 20s or early 30s, about 6 feet tall with a medium build and wearing a dark hoodie and jeans, was seen fleeing the area. As detectives pieced together the events of that evening, they also received information about a vehicle possibly connected to the shooting: a gray Dodge Charger.
For months, the case remained under investigation, a painful open wound for Wilson's loved ones. Then, in January 2017, a significant breakthrough came. The Wyandotte County District Attorney's office announced that they had charged 34-year-old Maurice Wayne Hall with one count of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Tyrone Wilson. Hall was taken into custody by authorities, and his bond was set at $250,000. Court records indicated that Wilson was shot while talking with several other people in front of a building in the 400 block of Troup Avenue.
