In the early morning hours of November 10, 2018, Ray B. Nunley, a 48-year-old Black / African American male, was fatally shot in Wichita, Kansas. The incident occurred in the 2200 block of South Glendale when Nunley stepped out of his home to intervene in a loud argument happening at the adjoining duplex. He was familiar with the individuals involved in the disturbance.
As he attempted to de-escalate the situation, multiple gunshots were fired in his direction.
Struck several times in the torso, Nunley managed to walk back towards his own home before collapsing on the sidewalk in front of his porch. Police were called to the scene at approximately 5:43 a.m. regarding a fight and reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered Nunley unresponsive. Emergency medical services were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead at 6:14 a.m.
The investigation into the shooting led police to identify a suspect in the killing. Authorities arrested 28-year-old Aubrey Montez Oliver on suspicion of first-degree murder. At the time of the incident, Oliver had been out of prison on parole for less than three months. His prior criminal history included a conviction related to a homicide in 2008, for which he had pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Evidence suggested that Nunley may have been armed when he went next door, but the investigation continued to determine if there was an exchange of gunfire.
