In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Wichita, Kansas, the life of 19-year-old Sonja Brown, a Black female, was tragically cut short. On December 1, 2019, Brown was at the 511 Club on North West Street, a venue that was operating after its legal closing time. An argument broke out between two men inside the club, escalating to the point where numerous gunshots were fired. As patrons scrambled for safety, Brown was struck by the gunfire.
She was not the intended target of the shooter and has been described by police as a completely innocent bystander who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. She later succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into Sonja Brown's death quickly identified a suspect. Terrance Nigel Johnson, 25, of Wichita, was named as the individual who allegedly fired the shots that killed Brown. The shooting was believed by police to have ties to local gangs. Following the incident, Johnson fled the state, prompting a multi-state search.
In January 2020, Terrance Nigel Johnson was located and arrested in Warr Acres, Oklahoma. He was extradited back to Kansas and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder in connection with Sonja Brown's death. His bond was set at $500,000. The arrest brought a measure of resolution to a case that highlighted the dangers of gun violence and its devastating impact on innocent lives.
