In the early morning hours of May 24, 2021, the quiet Greenbrier Condominiums complex in Overland Park, Kansas, was disturbed by the sound of a single gunshot. Officers who were dispatched to the 8500 block of West 85th Street shortly after 5:20 a.m. discovered the body of 35-year-old Jeren Hinton. The male victim was found unresponsive in the parking lot, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. Despite the efforts of first responders, Hinton was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses at the condominium complex, located across the street from the Overland Park City Hall and police department, reported seeing two or three men fleeing the area immediately after the shot was fired. They were seen getting into two separate vehicles, a black sedan and a white sedan, before speeding away in an unknown direction.
The investigation into Jeren Hinton's death quickly focused on identifying the individuals seen leaving the scene. Nearly a month after the shooting, on June 22, 2021, the Overland Park Police Department asked for the public's assistance in locating a person of interest, 24-year-old Kyle Anthony Gutierres. Authorities believed Gutierres had crucial information regarding the homicide. The following day, police announced that Gutierres had been taken into custody. The investigation further revealed that Gutierres' DNA and fingerprints were found on a 9mm pistol that was discovered in a nearby apartment. Another man's DNA was also present on the weapon. A witness had reported seeing two individuals leave that same apartment just before the gunshot rang out.
Initially, Kyle Anthony Gutierres was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm in federal court. However, in May 2021, Johnson County prosecutors charged him with premeditated first-degree murder in connection with Jeren Hinton's death. Gutierres denied his involvement in the killing but did admit to having handled the firearm found in the apartment. For three years, the case proceeded through the legal system.
In a significant development in May 2024, Kyle A. Gutierres, then 27, entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree intentional murder. His sentencing was scheduled for August of that year. This plea brought a long-awaited resolution to the case, officially holding someone accountable for the death of Jeren Hinton. The investigation, as detailed in public reports, did not mention any other arrests in connection with the murder.
