In the summer of 2021, a bright life was tragically cut short in Topeka, Kansas. Nevaeh Martinez, a 17-year-old Black female, was fatally shot on the evening of July 3rd. The vibrant teenager, described by her mother as being "full of life," was not the intended target of the violence that ended her life. She was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, an innocent bystander to a conflict she had no part in.
The shooting occurred outside a home in Topeka.
Following the incident, Nevaeh was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, her condition did not improve. The heartbreaking decision was made to remove her from life support, and she passed away the following day, on July 4, 2021. Her death left her family and community reeling in shock and grief, mourning the loss of a young woman with a promising future ahead of her.
In the days that followed the senseless act of violence, law enforcement officials worked diligently to bring justice for Nevaeh and her family. Their investigation quickly led to a suspect, and on July 8, 2021, Shawnee County authorities announced the arrest of 21-year-old Daisha Butler. Butler was formally charged with first-degree murder in connection with Nevaeh's death. According to Nevaeh's mother, her daughter did not know the woman accused of taking her life. Daisha Butler was taken into custody and held on a $1 million bond.
