In the autumn of 2023, a heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Topeka, Kansas, forever altering the lives of a young family. Four-year-old Lawrencia Perez-Belair, a Black/African American female, died on October 14th after suffering from a gunshot wound. The events of that day would soon lead to a thorough investigation and the arrest of a suspect close to the young girl.
Topeka police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of Northeast Grattan Street following a report
of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered the gravely injured child, who was immediately transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into the tragic death of young Lawrencia quickly identified all individuals involved. The following day, authorities arrested 24-year-old Mariann L. Belair, the mother of the victim. She was taken into custody and held at the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. Prosecutors formally charged her with first-degree murder and aggravated endangering of a child. A judge set her bond at one million dollars.
Details that emerged during the legal proceedings painted a grim picture of the moments leading up to the fatal shooting. It was revealed that Mariann Belair had left a loaded 9mm handgun on a couch within reach of her children. While she was distracted, her two-year-old son picked up the firearm and accidentally shot his older sister, Lawrencia. During her trial, Belair testified that she had taken the gun out of her diaper bag. Prosecutors argued that the weapon was left accessible to the children for at least twelve minutes. Evidence presented also indicated the presence and sale of methamphetamine at the residence. Following her trial, Mariann Belair was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after serving 25 years.
