Erica E. Bevitt, a 42-year-old White/Caucasian woman, was found dead on August 27, 2025, in the Montara subdivision just south of Topeka, Kansas. Deputies were dispatched for a welfare check late that morning, arriving to a quiet block on SW Briarmeade Lane where the stillness of the neighborhood masked what had unfolded inside the home.
Inside, investigators discovered Erica with a single gunshot wound and a man who appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot.
The scene told a compressed story of violence and finality, one that ended before help could reach either of them. Both were pronounced dead at the residence, and detectives began piecing together how the morning had turned into tragedy.
Authorities identified the man as Brian M. Bevitt, 45, and said the two had previously been in a domestic relationship.
