In the early morning hours of Saturday, May 29, 2021, the life of 32-year-old Shakeita Tacora Young, a Black/African American female, was tragically cut short in her Topeka, Kansas home. Responding to a report of a shooting just after 5 a.m., law enforcement arrived at a mobile home park in the 1800 block of N.E. Burgess Court to find Young suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite the efforts of first responders, she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation into her death quickly identified a person of interest, 31-year-old Kajun Daniel Brock. At the time, Brock was on parole for previous convictions, including aggravated robbery and assault on a law enforcement officer. A search for Brock ensued, with the Topeka Police Department seeking assistance from the public in locating him. The manhunt concluded on the evening of Wednesday, June 2, 2021, when the United States Marshal Service Fugitive Task Force located and apprehended Brock in Topeka.
Following his arrest, Kajun Brock was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. He was formally charged with first-degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm by a felon, with his bond set at $1 million. The investigation did not publicly release a motive for the shooting. The case against Brock proceeded through the Shawnee County District Court, culminating in a conviction and sentencing that brought a measure of legal closure to the untimely death of Shakeita Tacora Young.
