A bright life was tragically cut short on September 8, 2021, when 25-year-old Jennifer Ann Morris, a White female, was found deceased in her home on Southwest Briarwood Lane in Topeka, Kansas. Born in Corona, California, Jennifer had moved to Kansas in 2014 to be closer to her family. She was a loving mother to her young son and was remembered for her big heart.
The circumstances of her death pointed to a violent end.
The primary suspect in her murder was identified as her 33-year-old boyfriend, Jesse B. Lees of Topeka. According to witness reports, the couple had been involved in a heated argument and a physical altercation. The situation escalated dramatically when Lees allegedly dragged Jennifer into the bathroom and fatally shot her in the head. In the immediate aftermath, Lees fled the scene, leaving a community in shock and a family devastated by their sudden and profound loss.
Two days after the discovery of Jennifer’s body, on September 10, 2021, Topeka police officers located Jesse Lees driving a black Subaru Impreza. When they attempted to initiate a traffic stop, Lees sped away, leading to a vehicle pursuit. The chase came to an end when he crashed into another car at the intersection of Southwest 8th and Polk. Undeterred, Lees exited his vehicle and continued to flee on foot. As officers closed in, he pointed a handgun at them. In response, three officers discharged their firearms, striking Lees multiple times. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation that followed confirmed that the firearm Lees possessed at the time of the confrontation with police was the same weapon used to murder Jennifer Ann Morris. An autopsy later revealed that Lees had methamphetamine and tramadol in his system at the time of his death. The Shawnee County District Attorney reviewed the officer-involved shooting and ruled that the use of deadly force was justified, and consequently, no criminal charges were filed against the officers. The case was brought to a close with the death of the sole suspect, leaving friends and family to mourn the untimely loss of a young mother.
