In the early morning hours of Friday, February 7, 2025, a tragedy unfolded in Topeka, Kansas, that marked the city's first homicide of the year. Olivia Miller, a 51-year-old Black / African American woman, was fatally shot in a residence located in the 2700 block of SW Burnett Road. The violent encounter also left two other individuals with life-threatening injuries. When first responders arrived at the scene shortly after 7:30 a.m., they discovered three people suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Olivia Miller was pronounced deceased at the scene. The two other victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The investigation into the shooting led to the swift arrest of 29-year-old Devin Miller of Topeka. He was taken into custody and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. Initially, he faced charges of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated battery. These charges were later specified as second-degree murder and two counts of aggravated battery, with his bond set at one million dollars.
Further details emerged through a court affidavit, which alleged that Devin Miller had shot his parents and his sister. Olivia Miller was identified as his mother. His father and sister survived the attack. According to the affidavit, both the father and sister indicated to detectives that Devin Miller had been struggling with mental health issues. His father could not provide a reason for the shooting, and his sister reported hearing no arguments or disturbances before the gunshots. The relationship between the suspect and the victims painted a grim picture of a domestic tragedy that ended a life and irrevocably altered several others.
