In the quiet early morning hours of November 20, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in an Olathe, Kansas neighborhood. When police responded to the reports of shots fired in the 1000 block of East Fredrickson Drive, they discovered a grim scene. Inside a vehicle, two people had been fatally shot. One of the victims was a 45-year-old Hispanic woman named Angela "Angie" Cornacchio Santiago of Tonganoxie. Alongside her was 42-year-old Jose Arellano-Rascon, who was also deceased.
Both had sustained gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence. Evidence suggested that the couple had been targeted, followed to the location by their assailants. The Olathe Police Department began a search for a dark gray Ford F-150 pickup truck that was seen leaving the area and was believed to be connected to the crime. Authorities appealed to the public for assistance, asking residents to review their home surveillance footage for any sign of the suspect vehicle. The truck was described as having a covered bed, tinted windows, and distinctive six-spoke wheels. Police believed that four or five men were inside the truck at the time of the shooting.
For nearly a year, the investigation into the double homicide continued. Then, in September 2022, a major breakthrough was announced. The Johnson County District Attorney's Office charged three men with capital murder in connection with the deaths of Santiago and Arellano-Rascon. The suspects were identified as 39-year-old Salvador Garcia-Zarate, 40-year-old Jesus Cereceda-Soto, and 37-year-old Axel Arellanes-Vara. Each of the men had their bond set at $10 million. The arrests brought a measure of relief to a community that had been shaken by the violent crime, as authorities worked to bring justice for Angela and Jose.
