On a summer day in Olathe, Kansas, the life of 36-year-old Amy A. Mabion, a Caucasian female, was tragically cut short on July 31, 2017. The devastating event unfolded inside her home, where she was fatally shot by her husband, Philip Mabion, who then used the firearm on himself. Amy was pronounced dead at the scene, while her husband succumbed to his injuries later at a hospital.
The couple, who were both 36, left behind three children: two sons, ages 12 and 9, and a 6-year-old daughter.
The violence that erupted on that fateful Monday left friends and family in shock. Amy had filed for divorce on June 1 of that year, citing incompatibility with her husband of nearly eleven years. Despite the divorce proceedings, the couple was reportedly still living together and had recently vacationed in the Dominican Republic. Those who knew them described a loving relationship, with Philip once orchestrating an elaborate birthday celebration for his wife and Amy expressing her love for him in social media posts.
The investigation by Olathe police pointed towards a murder-suicide, with evidence indicating that Philip Mabion shot his wife before taking his own life. Amy’s sister revealed that Amy had spent the weekend before her death at her sister's house, finding it emotionally taxing to be around her husband. On the day of her death, Amy had planned to quickly stop by the house to pick up some clothes for herself and the children, under the impression that her husband would not be there. She was on the phone with her sister as she pulled into the driveway, ending the call with a promise to call back that she would never be able to keep. Police informed her sister that as Amy entered the house, her husband came up behind her and shot her in the head, leaving no signs of a struggle. She died instantly.
Described as a sweetheart who lived for her children, Amy was a former kindergarten teacher who became a stay-at-home mother. Her sister believes that Philip’s motive was a refusal to see his wife happy without him. The couple's three children are now being raised by Amy’s family. In the wake of this tragedy, no arrests were made as the sole suspect in Amy Mabion's death was her deceased husband.
