On a cold February evening in Kansas City, Kansas, the life of 14-year-old Samuel Guess, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On February 18, 2022, inside an apartment near 22nd Street and Birch Drive, Samuel and his friend, 14-year-old Antonio Johnson, were both fatally shot. The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department responded to a shooting call around 10 p.m. and discovered the two teenagers, both students in the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools, deceased at the scene from gunshot wounds. The double homicide took place in a residence located across the street from Argentine Middle School.

The violent deaths of the two young boys prompted an immediate and intensive investigation by the Major Case Unit of the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department. For several months, detectives pursued leads in the double homicide that had shaken the community. The investigation culminated on May 3, 2022, when authorities announced a significant breakthrough in the case. With the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Kansas Fugitive Apprehension Task Force, a suspect was taken into custody.

The individual arrested was Patrick Howard, a 24-year-old resident of Kansas City, Missouri. The Wyandotte County District Attorney's Office subsequently charged Howard with two counts of second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Samuel Guess and Antonio Johnson. Following his arrest, Howard was held in the Wyandotte County Jail on a $250,000 bond. In June 2025, Patrick Howard was found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder and one count of witness intimidation. He was later sentenced to 330 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections for his role in the shooting deaths of the two teenagers.
