On the evening of February 4, 2011, Derrick Rawls, a 20-year-old resident of Northwest Washington, D.C., was fatally shot. The incident occurred at approximately 9:23 PM in the 4500 block of 8th Street, NW. Responding to reports of gunshots, D.C. Police found Rawls in an alley suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to save him, Rawls was pronounced dead at the scene.
The location of the shooting was near a public school and a church, adding to the community's distress.
