In the early hours of a Saturday morning in Washington, D.C., a dispute over something as simple as a can of beer escalated into a fatal encounter for Talbert Mitchell Bright. The 48-year-old man was near the intersection of 2nd Street and Massachusetts Avenue, NW, on June 28, 2014, when the argument turned violent. It was there that he sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. First responders arrived at the scene around 2:44 a.m. and rushed him to a local hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

On June 29, 2014, authorities arrested 30-year-old James Johnson in connection with the homicide.
