In the autumn of 2013, a 34-year-old dental hygienist from Stamford, Connecticut, named Miriam Iris Carey, found her life cut tragically short in the heart of Washington, D.C. On the afternoon of October 3rd, a chaotic and ultimately fatal series of events began to unfold when Carey, driving her black Infiniti with her one-year-old daughter secured in the back, approached a security checkpoint near the White House.
After entering a restricted area, she made a U-turn and drove away from the checkpoint. This action initiated a high-speed pursuit through the streets of the nation's capital.
The chase weaved through traffic, with law enforcement in close pursuit. The pursuit continued for several blocks until it reached the area surrounding the U.S. Capitol. Near the Capitol, officers attempted to block her vehicle. In the ensuing moments, as she tried to maneuver her car away from the officers, shots were fired. The car eventually crashed, and when officers reached the vehicle, they discovered Carey had been struck by gunfire. She was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her young daughter was found in the car, physically unharmed, and was taken into protective custody. An autopsy later revealed that Miriam Carey had been shot five times from behind.
In the aftermath of the incident, an investigation was launched by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia to review the actions of the U.S. Secret Service and U.S. Capitol Police officers involved. The investigation concluded that there was insufficient evidence to prove that the officers used excessive force or had criminal intent. Consequently, no charges were filed against any of the officers, and no arrests were made in connection with Miriam Carey's death. The incident was deemed a result of a series of events that escalated rapidly, and the investigation did not identify any suspects to be prosecuted. Information that emerged during the investigation indicated that Carey had been experiencing mental health challenges, including postpartum depression, in the period leading up to her death.
