In the spring of 1971, a shadow fell over Washington, D.C., a darkness that would linger for decades. It began with the disappearance of a 13-year-old African-American girl named Carol Denise Spinks. On the evening of April 25th, she was sent on a simple errand by her older sister to a local 7-Eleven, just a short walk from her home.
