In the spring of 2024, a burst of violence shattered the evening quiet in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, claiming the life of 21-year-old Zauhnteen Adam-Vertel Jackson. On the evening of Tuesday, May 21st, shots rang out in the area of South 15th and Chestnut streets, marking another tragic chapter in the city's struggle with gun violence. Zauhnteen, a young man from Harrisburg, was caught in the gunfire and sustained fatal injuries.
He was one of two men who lost their lives in what police would later describe as a mass shooting that also left three other individuals wounded.
Zauhnteen, known affectionately by nicknames such as 'The Dream' and 'ZDawg,' was remembered as a charismatic and family-oriented individual with a love for life. He was a father to four young daughters and had a passion for working with his hands, which led him to careers in carpentry and landscaping. In his younger years at Mary D. Bradford High School in Kenosha, Wisconsin, he had been a standout athlete, excelling in football, track and field, and wrestling. His love for animals was so profound that some likened him to an 'animal whisperer.' His family recalled his infectious laughter and his compassionate nature, which extended to helping the elderly.
The investigation into the deadly shooting led authorities to identify and charge a suspect in connection with the incident. Kameron Hymes, 27, was arrested and faced a charge of homicide for his alleged role in the events that led to Zauhnteen's death. In addition to the homicide charge, Hymes also faced four counts of recklessly endangering another person and two firearms-related offenses. Another man, 27-year-old Dominic Jackson, was also killed during the shooting; however, the District Attorney later ruled his death an act of self-defense, stating that he had initiated the gunfire. Police also announced they were searching for another individual, 21-year-old Bradley Lebrun, who was wanted on charges of possessing a prohibited firearm and simple assault in connection to the same incident. The investigation by the Harrisburg Police remained ongoing as they continued to piece together the events of that tragic night.
