On the night of April 18, 1978, a dedicated Harrisburg Police Bureau officer, Detective Corporal John Robert Christian Jr., a 35-year-old Caucasian male, was working a second job to support his family. He was providing uniformed security at a local beer distributor, a seemingly routine assignment that would soon turn tragic. That evening, a report of a robbery in progress at the grocery area of the distributor crackled through. As Christian moved to intercept the suspects outside the store, his life was cut short by gunfire. The dedicated officer was rushed to Harrisburg Hospital, but despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his wounds three hours later, leaving behind a wife and three children. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Christian had honorably served on the police force for twelve years.
The investigation into the murder of Detective Corporal Christian quickly zeroed in on a 33-year-old male suspect. A determined manhunt led authorities to Trenton, New Jersey, where the suspect was located just three days after the shooting. When officers from both the Trenton and Harrisburg police departments moved in to apprehend him at his girlfriend's apartment, the suspect chose to open fire on the law enforcement officers. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, he was seriously wounded.
Following his apprehension and recovery, the suspect faced the consequences of his actions in a court of law. He was ultimately found guilty of first-degree murder for the death of Detective Corporal John Robert Christian Jr. In addition to the murder conviction, he was also found guilty of four counts of armed robbery. The court handed down a sentence of life in prison for the murder, with an additional four consecutive terms of 10 to 20 years for the robberies, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life behind bars for the violent end he brought to a respected officer's life.
