In the early evening of Monday, February 22, 2016, a single gunshot ended the life of 21-year-old Deandre A. Sibblies in the 4500 block of Quarles Street in Northeast Washington, D.C. The fatal incident occurred at approximately 5:38 p.m. Loved ones described Mr. Sibblies, a male known affectionately as 'Dre,' as a respectable young man who was actively involved in his community, even helping to coach youth football.
He was not known to be involved in any criminal activity and did not have a police record.
On the day of his death, Deandre had been dropped off by his mother at the Kenilworth-Parkside Recreation Center, not far from where he was ultimately shot. His family believes a dispute with individuals he knew may have led to the tragic event. Deandre’s mother recounted the painful memory of rushing to the scene only to find his clothing lying behind crime-scene tape as he was being transported to the hospital. The shooting occurred on his sister's 22nd birthday, compounding the family's grief.
In the wake of the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department launched a homicide investigation and appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible. Despite these efforts, the case of Deandre A. Sibblies's murder remains unsolved, and there have been no arrests made in connection with his death.
