On May 27th, at approximately 12:59 a.m., Jones was in the 100 block of Q Street, NW when gunfire erupted. The incident was not a targeted attack on a single individual, but a chaotic and violent event that left seven other people, six men and one woman, with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
When the
Metropolitan Police Department and emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they found a distressing sight. Jones was discovered lying on the ground, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate response, his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was then transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The seven other victims were taken to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries. Jones was remembered as a father.
The investigation into the shooting painted a picture of a brazen drive-by attack. According to police reports, two men opened fire into a crowd of people. The suspects were described as two Black males, both wearing dark clothing. Witnesses saw them flee the scene, heading eastbound on Q Street in a black vehicle with tinted windows. In the years that have followed the death of Algernon Harvey Jones, his case remains one of Washington, D.C.'s unsolved homicides. The Metropolitan Police Department has continued to seek the public's assistance in gathering information that could lead to the apprehension and conviction of the individuals responsible. A reward of up to $25,000 has been offered for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case. However, to date, no arrests have been made, and the two suspects who vanished into the night in a black vehicle with tinted windows remain at large. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly disclosed by authorities, leaving a community to grapple with the unanswered questions surrounding the violent loss of a young father.
