In the early hours of a January morning in 2017, a burst of gunfire on the 600 block of 14th Place, Northeast, shattered the quiet of the Washington, D.C. neighborhood. When officers arrived at approximately 6:40 a.m., they discovered two men inside a vehicle, both suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the men, 22-year-old Ronnell Tye Reaves, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other, a 22-year-old male named Kevin Kennedy, was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.
For more than a year, Kennedy clung to life, eventually being moved to a long-term care facility. However, the severe injuries he sustained proved to be insurmountable. On July 8, 2018, the 23-year-old succumbed to his wounds. An autopsy later confirmed that his death was a direct result of the gunshot wounds to his head and the subsequent complications.
The investigation into the shooting led to an arrest a few weeks after the incident. On February 6, 2017, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended Matthew Moore in connection with the shooting. Moore was initially charged with second-degree murder while armed for the death of Ronnell Tye Reaves. Following Kennedy's passing, authorities announced that Moore would face additional charges related to his death.
