On a Friday morning, March 17, 2017, in Washington, D.C., 33-year-old Steven Edward Stewart Jr., a Black male, was shot and killed. The incident occurred around 8:50 a.m. in the 2200 block of Minnesota Avenue, SE. The Metropolitan Police Department promptly began an investigation into the homicide, seeking help from the public to gather information about the fatal shooting.
The investigation led to the identification of a suspect, Antoine Kingwood.
Surveillance footage from outside a store on Minnesota Avenue reportedly captured Kingwood, then 25, pulling a gun from his waistband and shooting Stewart. A witness also identified Kingwood as the shooter. Following the investigation, Kingwood was arrested and charged in connection with Steven Stewart's death.
Initially, Antwaun Kingwood faced charges of second-degree murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and carrying a pistol without a license. However, the case concluded with a plea agreement. Kingwood pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and carrying a pistol without a license. On July 10, 2018, a DC Superior Court judge sentenced him to four and a half years in prison for his involvement in the homicide.
