In the spring of 2017, a shooting in Southeast Washington, D.C. claimed the life of 26-year-old Michael Derricote, Jr. of Upper Marlboro, Maryland. On the evening of Friday, April 14, at approximately 8:05 p.m., gunfire erupted in the 3500 block of Stanton Road, SE. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered two men on the ground in front of a residence, both suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
A nearby vehicle was also damaged by the gunfire.
Both victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Derricote was admitted with life-threatening injuries, while the second man was in critical but stable condition. For over two weeks, Derricote fought for his life, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, April 30, 2017. His death was officially classified as a homicide the following day.
In the wake of the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department launched an active investigation and appealed to the public for assistance in gathering information regarding the homicide. As of early May 2017, authorities were still searching for the suspect or suspects involved in the shooting, and no arrests had been made. The investigation into Michael Derricote's death remains ongoing.
