On a cool spring evening in Washington, D.C., the sound of gunshots shattered the night in the 4600 block of Hillside Road, Southeast. It was approximately 10:01 p.m. on Monday, April 1, 2019, when officers from the Sixth District responded to the scene. Upon their arrival, they discovered a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services were quickly on the scene, transporting the victim to a nearby hospital in an attempt to save his life.
Despite their efforts, the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The victim was later identified as 28-year-old Maurice Wheeler. At the time of his death, he had no fixed address. The cause of his death was determined to be the multiple gunshot wounds he sustained.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch were called in to lead the investigation into the fatal shooting. As of now, the case remains an open and ongoing homicide investigation.
In an effort to bring those responsible to justice, the Metropolitan Police Department has offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of Maurice Wheeler. The authorities have encouraged anyone with information about the case to come forward and contact them. To date, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects in connection with this case.
