In the autumn of 2019, a dispute on a Southeast Washington, D.C. street escalated into a fatal encounter for 30-year-old Jonathan Jones. On the afternoon of Friday, October 11, 2019, Jones was driving on Good Hope Road when he nearly struck a pedestrian. Witnesses reported that Jones stopped his car, got out to check his tires, and an argument ensued with the pedestrian.
Jones reportedly told the man that it was an accident.
During the verbal exchange, the pedestrian pulled out a handgun and shot Jones in the neck. The incident occurred at approximately 3:26 p.m. in the 1900 block of 16th Street, Southeast. After being shot, Jones was found slumped in the open driver's-side doorway of his vehicle. D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Within hours of the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department made an arrest. Lamar D. Hicks, a 24-year-old from Southeast, D.C., was identified as the suspect. According to police, a combination of witness testimony and surveillance footage from nearby businesses led them to Hicks. Although the shooting itself was not captured on video, footage showed a man matching Hicks's description speaking with Jones before the incident. One witness later identified Hicks in a photo lineup. Hicks was subsequently charged with second-degree murder while armed. However, court documents later indicated that the case against Lamar Hicks was dismissed on October 24, 2019.
