In the early hours of Sunday, March 17, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the pre-dawn stillness in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C., leaving a scene of chaos and tragedy. When the violence subsided, two men lay dead, and five others were wounded. One of the deceased was 32-year-old Jay Lucks, a male resident of Baltimore, Maryland. The incident unfolded around 3:01 a.m.
at the intersection of 7th and P Streets, Northwest, a location that has unfortunately been familiar with violence.
Metropolitan Police Department officers from the Third District were the first to respond to the reports of the shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered a harrowing scene with multiple victims. Three men and two women were found suffering from gunshot wounds in the 600 block of P Street, Northwest, and were quickly transported to local hospitals for medical attention. A sixth victim later walked into a hospital for treatment. Tragically, Jay Lucks and another man, identified as 32-year-old Anthony Brown of Southeast, D.C., were found with gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The preliminary investigation by the Homicide Branch suggests that one or more suspects intentionally discharged a firearm at the victims. While a motive for the mass shooting remains under investigation, authorities have released a limited description of a person of interest. They are searching for a man of average build, who was last seen wearing light pants and a blue shirt, fleeing south on 7th Street away from the scene of the crime.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the murders of Jay Lucks and Anthony Brown. The Metropolitan Police Department is actively investigating the case and has offered a substantial reward of up to $50,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this violent act. The community has been urged to come forward with any information that could help bring justice to the victims and their families.
