Martin Bodrog, a 54-year-old male, was a man dedicated to his family, faith, and country. A native of Woodbury, New Jersey, he was a standout football player and wrestler in high school, known for his bright and funny personality. He went on to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1981 and served for 22 years as a surface warfare officer in the Navy. After his military service, he continued his work as a civilian contractor, overseeing the design and procurement of ships for the Navy.
In January 2013, he was transferred to the Washington Navy Yard.
On September 16, 2013, the peace of the Washington Navy Yard was shattered when a gunman, identified as Aaron Alexis, opened fire. Martin Bodrog was one of the 12 innocent people who lost their lives in the senseless act of violence. The shooter, a former Navy reservist working as a contractor, was killed by police during the attack. The tragic event left a deep void in the lives of those who knew and loved Martin.
Remembered as a humble and empathetic man, Martin was an active member of his church, Immanuel Bible Church in Springfield, Virginia, where he taught Sunday school to three-year-olds. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 25 years, Melanie, and a loving father to their three daughters, Isabel, Sophie, and Rita. Friends and family recalled his infectious gap-toothed grin and his passion for the Boston Bruins. His brother described him as a 'fantastic brother, husband and father,' and a close friend said that those who were lucky enough to know him were better people for it. His family and community were left to mourn a man who was a source of great inspiration and who had a special way of connecting with people from all walks of life.
