In the late afternoon hours of Sunday, September 17, 2023, a shooting shattered the quiet of a Northeast Washington, D.C. neighborhood. Responding to reports of gunfire at approximately 3:52 p.m., officers from the Fifth District arrived at the 1200 block of Brentwood Road, Northeast, to find a man suffering from gunshot wounds. The injured man was identified as 34-year-old Michael McKinney of Northeast, D.C.
Emergency medical services rushed McKinney to a local hospital in a desperate
attempt to save his life, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The incident was one of many homicides that contributed to a significant increase in killings in the District in 2023 compared to the previous year.
For several months, the case remained under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch. Then, on Friday, December 8, 2023, a breakthrough was made in the case. Members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, acting on a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant, located and apprehended a suspect.
The suspect was identified as 23-year-old Tyree Sanders of Northwest, D.C. He was subsequently charged with First Degree Murder while Armed in connection with the fatal shooting of Michael McKinney. The arrest brought a measure of progress to a case that had added to the city's growing homicide count.
