In the waning hours of a December evening in Washington, D.C., the life of 19-year-old Ronald Crews was tragically cut short. On Tuesday, December 26, 2023, the young Black man was fatally shot in the 2600 block of Benning Road, Northeast. The initial alert to law enforcement came at approximately 6:55 p.m. as a report of gunshots in that area. Responding officers from the Fifth District of the Metropolitan Police Department discovered evidence of a shooting but found no victim at the scene.
A couple of hours later, at around 8:58 p.m., a grim discovery was made nearly two miles away. Sixth District officers were dispatched to the 4300 block of Hunt Place, Northeast, following a report of an unconscious person. There, they found Ronald Crews suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite any efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The ensuing investigation by the MPD's Homicide Branch connected the two incidents, determining that Crews had been shot on Benning Road before being found on Hunt Place. As of now, the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, and a motive has not been determined. The investigation into the death of Ronald Crews is ongoing, and authorities have not yet identified any suspects or made any arrests in the case. The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a substantial reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his death.
