On an early morning in August, the life of 19-year-old Andre Baker was cut short in a sudden act of violence. After a night out with two friends in the lively U Street neighborhood of Washington, D.C., the group was waiting at a bus stop in the 1200 block of U Street Northwest. At approximately 5:01 a.m. on August 5, 2023, as a new day was dawning, their night took a tragic turn.
Without any apparent warning or provocation, a man approached them and opened fire.
Baker was shot multiple times in the head and torso. One of his friends was also grazed by a bullet. Emergency services responded to the scene, but Andre Baker was pronounced dead. The senseless act of violence left a community in shock and a family grappling with an immense loss.
The suspect, identified as 20-year-old David Botchway of Gwynn Oak, Maryland, fled the scene on foot. However, Metropolitan Police Department officers who were on patrol nearby heard the gunshots and saw Botchway running. After a brief chase, they apprehended him at the corner of 12th and T Streets, Northwest. A. 40 caliber Glock 22 handgun with an extended magazine was recovered from him at the time of his arrest. The entire incident was captured on several surveillance cameras in the area, providing crucial evidence for the investigation.
David Botchway was arrested and charged in connection with the murder. In December 2023, he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed. Subsequently, in May 2024, a judge sentenced him to 18 years in prison. The resolution of the case in the justice system brought a measure of closure to a painful chapter for the family and friends of Andre Baker, though the void left by his untimely death remains.
