In the early hours of Sunday, November 1, 2020, the life of 16-year-old Kareem Palmer was tragically cut short. The male teenager was found suffering from a gunshot wound at approximately 1:00 a.m. in the 1300 block of Mapleview Place, SE, in Washington, D.C. Emergency crews transported him to a local hospital, but his life could not be saved. The incident occurred just a block from where he lived with his mother and brothers in Anacostia.
Kareem was a young man with aspirations for a
future beyond his neighborhood. Described as reserved with a good sense of humor, he was the middle child of seven boys raised by a single mother. An 11th-grader, he had dreams of being the first in his family to attend college and wanted to explore the world outside of Southeast D.C. Those who knew him said he was respectful and was beginning to find his own way. He had attended Richard Wright Public Charter School and was a student at Eastern Senior High School at the time of his death.
On the night he was killed, Kareem had gone out for Halloween with his younger brothers, though they were not with him when the shooting occurred hours later. Police reported that it appeared nine shots were fired, with Kareem being struck once.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department launched a homicide investigation and sought assistance from the public, offering a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. As of late 2020, no arrests had been made in connection with his death. The investigation into the circumstances leading to his death was ongoing.
