On a winter afternoon in Washington, D.C., a confrontation at a gas station escalated into a fatal encounter for 21-year-old Tia Carey. On January 6, 2020, Carey, a mother of two, was at a Valero gas station on Minnesota Avenue NE when she became involved in a physical altercation with another woman, 21-year-old Tierra Posey. The dispute reportedly arose after Carey discovered Posey with her boyfriend at the gas station.
The argument quickly turned violent, with witnesses reporting a
physical fight between the two women. In the midst of the struggle, Posey allegedly produced a firearm and fired two shots, striking Carey. Medics arrived at the scene and transported Carey to a local hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries. Bystanders at the gas station reportedly intervened and held Posey at the scene until law enforcement arrived.
Police arrested Tierra Posey and charged her with second-degree murder while armed. The case went to trial, where the defense argued that Posey acted in self-defense. Video surveillance confirmed that Carey was the initial aggressor in the physical confrontation.
