On a Saturday afternoon, June 6, 2020, in the Brentwood neighborhood of Northeast Washington, D.C., the life of 18-year-old Marquis Harrod, a male resident of Southeast, DC, was tragically cut short. At approximately 4:50 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting in the 1300 block of Brentwood Road, Northeast. Upon arrival, they discovered Harrod suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Harrod's death led homicide detectives to identify a suspect. On Wednesday, June 17, 2020, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 24-year-old Micah Bidgell of Northeast, D.C., charging him with second-degree murder while armed. Bidgell was taken into custody based on a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant.
Following the arrest, the case proceeded through the justice system. In June 2022, Bidgell rejected a plea deal that would have required him to plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter while armed. The case went to trial, where details of the incident emerged. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Harrod approaching Bidgell's car after leaving a liquor store. It was alleged that after a brief interaction, Bidgell fired multiple shots at Harrod before driving away. The defense argued that Harrod had approached the vehicle with a gun, and the shooting was an act of self-defense. After spending over two years in jail, a jury found Micah Bidgell not guilty on all counts on November 9, 2022, and he was subsequently released from custody. The verdict left Harrod's family audibly disappointed in the courtroom.
