In the early morning hours of July 26, 2020, the sound of gunfire echoed through the 800 block of Chesapeake Street, Southeast Washington, D.C. At approximately 2:49 a.m., members of the Seventh District responded to the reports. Their investigation led them to a vehicle in the 4200 block of 7th Street, SE, in the Congress Heights neighborhood. Inside, they discovered 23-year-old Keith Rawlings, a male resident of Glenarden, Maryland, suffering from gunshot wounds.
DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene, but Rawlings showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead.
Homicide detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department immediately began their investigation into the killing. For weeks, the case progressed as authorities searched for the person or persons responsible for the fatal shooting. The department offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the homicide of the young man.
A break in the case came on Wednesday, September 9, 2020. Pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, authorities arrested 20-year-old Kyree Fields of Laurel, Maryland. He was transported to the Homicide Branch and charged with first-degree murder while armed in connection with Rawlings' death. At the time of his arrest, it was noted that Fields had been previously arrested on two separate occasions for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
However, the case against Fields took an unexpected turn in court. During a hearing on November 10, 2020, a DC Superior Court Judge dismissed the murder case, ruling that there was not enough evidence for it to proceed to trial. The judge found a lack of probable cause, citing insufficient witnesses and motive presented by the prosecution. Although the prosecution pointed to a ballistics report as a potential link, the defense argued it was not confirmed evidence. As a result, Kyree Fields was released in connection with the murder of Keith Rawlings, though he was still held on other separate matters.
