On the evening of March 20, 2021, a 23-year-old Black/African American male named Deonte Minor was fatally shot in Washington, D.C. A resident of King George, Virginia, Minor was a passenger in an Uber, reportedly on his way to his sister's baby shower. The vehicle was located in the 1200 block of Southern Avenue, Southeast, waiting to make a turn when the shooting occurred.
Around 7:56 p.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to a local hospital following a
report of a walk-in shooting victim. Upon arrival, they discovered Deonte Minor suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate action of the Uber driver, who rushed him to the hospital after the incident, and the life-saving efforts of medical personnel, Minor succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the homicide led detectives to identify a person of interest. Several months later, on September 3, 2021, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 38-year-old Jarvis Jackson of Capitol Heights, Maryland. Jackson was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed.
During legal proceedings, the prosecution put forth a motive, alleging that Jackson had fatally shot Minor in retaliation for a robbery supposedly committed by Minor against Jackson months earlier. However, the defense contested this claim, describing the alleged robbery as a fabrication and arguing that Jackson had no reason to harm Minor. The defense also highlighted that DNA evidence recovered from the crime scene did not match Jackson. On August 1, 2024, a jury acquitted Jarvis Jackson of all charges connected to the death of Deonte Minor.
