On a Saturday evening in Northeast Washington, D.C., a celebration turned to tragedy. Twenty-one-year-old Demetris Johnson was attending a gender reveal party on March 20, 2021, in the unit block of Madison Street, Northeast. At approximately 7:44 p.m., the joyous occasion was shattered by the sound of gunfire. When officers from the Fourth District arrived at the scene, they discovered two men who had been shot. One of them was Demetris Johnson, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation into the shooting led police to identify 18-year-old Nyjell Outler of Southeast, D.C., as the suspect. According to authorities, Outler was captured on security footage arriving at the party wearing a heavy winter coat and carrying a backpack. He was seen pulling a handgun from the backpack and concealing it in his pants before opening fire on a group of young men, which included Johnson. After firing at least four shots, Outler fled the area. The Metropolitan Police Department issued a warrant for his arrest, charging him with second-degree murder while armed.
For nearly a year, Outler remained at large and was even listed as one of the U.S. Marshals' 15 most wanted suspects. The search for him concluded on February 23, 2022, when he was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in South Bay, Florida. Outler was extradited to Washington, D.C., to face legal proceedings. In March 2025, a jury convicted Nyjell Outler, then 22, of voluntary manslaughter while armed, aggravated assault while armed, and two counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. On August 15, 2025, a D.C. Superior Court judge sentenced him to 24 years in prison for his role in the fatal shooting of Demetris Johnson.
