On a summer evening in Washington, D.C., tragedy struck the 1600 block of 21st Place, Southeast. It was here, on June 5, 2013, that 33-year-old Rodney Ellis Gardner, a Black male resident of the city, was fatally shot. The incident occurred at approximately 10:20 p.m. outside a residential building, shattering the night's quiet with the sound of gunfire.
Officers from the Seventh District of the Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of the shooting and discovered Gardner suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene and quickly transported him to a local hospital in an effort to save his life. Despite their efforts, Rodney Gardner succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. In the immediate aftermath, a makeshift memorial of candles and flowers marked the spot where he fell, a somber tribute from a community shaken by the violence. His death resonated deeply with family and friends, who remembered him and called for an end to the violence plaguing their neighborhood.
The investigation into Rodney Gardner's murder was launched by the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch. In the early stages of the investigation, authorities were reportedly looking for a Black male in his early twenties with cornrows who was believed to be armed. However, the case has been met with significant challenges, primarily a lack of forthcoming witnesses. To encourage community cooperation, the police have offered a substantial reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Gardner's death. Despite these efforts and the passage of time, no arrests have been made, and the case remains an unsolved homicide. The Metropolitan Police Department continues to appeal to the public for any leads that might bring closure to Rodney Gardner's family and see justice served.
