In the early evening hours of Saturday, August 7, 2021, a grim discovery was made in the 200 block of 49th Street, Southeast in Washington, D.C. Authorities were called to the scene at approximately 6:17 p.m., where they found 69-year-old James Clayton Beckham, a male resident of Suitland, Maryland, unresponsive inside a vehicle. He was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Emergency medical services arrived at the location, but it was too late. Mr.
Beckham showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch was called in to lead the investigation into what was quickly determined to be a homicide.
In the days following the shooting, the police department publicly identified James Beckham as the victim and appealed to the community for any information that might lead to the apprehension of the person or persons responsible for his death. A reward of up to $25,000 was offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.
Despite the ongoing investigation and the reward offered, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects in the murder of James Clayton Beckham. The case remains an open and active investigation, leaving a community searching for answers and a family grieving a senseless loss.
