On the morning of March 4, 2022, in Northeast Washington, D.C., 42-year-old Sedrick Miller was walking with his two young children. As they made their way along the 2300 block of 18th Street NE at approximately 8:30 a.m., a man confronted Miller and opened fire. In a tragic and brazen attack, Miller was shot multiple times in the face and upper body while holding his infant in a car seat and the hand of his five-year-old child.
The children were physically unharmed but were witnesses to their father's violent death.
The gunman fled the scene, leaving a horrified community in his wake. The Metropolitan Police Department swiftly identified a suspect in the fatal shooting as 27-year-old Jarrell David Harris of Southeast, D.C. An arrest warrant was issued, and a search for Harris began. The motive for the shooting appeared to stem from an ongoing dispute between the two men, with reports indicating that Miller had previously dated Harris's sister.
Two months after the shooting, on May 6, 2022, Jarrell Harris was apprehended and charged with first-degree murder while armed. In January 2023, Harris pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Harris standing over Miller and continuing to fire. As part of a plea agreement, Harris was sentenced to 13 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release.
