In the spring of 2022, a violent encounter on a street in Southeast Washington, D.C., set in motion a tragedy that would unfold over the course of nearly two years. On the evening of May 10th, officers from the Seventh District responded to a report of a shooting in the 2500 block of Pomeroy Road. There they found 40-year-old Cesar Barrera suffering from gunshot wounds. He was a male resident of Southeast, D.C.
Barrera was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he would begin a long and arduous fight for his life.
For almost 21 months, Cesar Barrera endured the severe complications stemming from the violent attack. His struggle came to an end on February 7, 2024, when he succumbed to his injuries. Following his passing, the DC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy to determine the official cause of his death. On May 22, 2024, the medical examiner ruled his death a homicide, attributing it to complications from the gunshot wounds he sustained in the 2022 shooting.
The Metropolitan Police Department is leading the homicide investigation into Barrera's death. To date, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects, and no arrests have been made in connection with the case. The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including a possible motive, have not been released to the public. The police department is urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and has offered a substantial reward for any tips that lead to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Cesar Barrera's death. The investigation remains open and active.
