In the late evening hours of August 11, 2022, a burst of gunfire shattered the relative calm in the Dupont Circle area of Washington, D.C. Stephon Johns, a 31-year-old Black male from Northeast Washington, was standing in the 2000 block of Florida Avenue, NW, when he became the target of a fatal attack. At approximately 9:31 p.m., assailants in a silver 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia reportedly pulled up, and four individuals exited the vehicle, opening fire on Johns.
The brazen shooting also injured another man nearby, who was rushed to a local hospital with critical but non-life-threatening injuries.
After being struck by the gunfire, Johns ran a short distance toward Connecticut Avenue before collapsing near the entrance of a nightclub. Emergency services responded to the scene, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The Metropolitan Police Department quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence, stating that Johns was specifically targeted. Investigators later released a surveillance photo of the suspect vehicle, a distinctive sedan with yellow brake calipers, which they believe had been carjacked just days before the murder, only a few blocks from where the shooting occurred.
Stephon Johns was a dedicated employee of the Georgetown Business Improvement District, where he had worked for nearly two years as part of the 'clean team,' maintaining the streets of the historic neighborhood. His mother described him as a hardworking father who was raising his 12-year-old son and supporting her at their home. His death left his family grappling with a sudden and devastating loss. Despite the public release of the vehicle's image and a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible, no arrests have been made in the case. The Metropolitan Police Department's investigation into the murder of Stephon Johns remains ongoing as they continue to seek assistance from the public to bring the perpetrators to justice.
