In the small, isolated mining town of National, Nevada, Deputy Sheriff John Holmes, a male, was the sole presence of law and order. On the night of August 27, 1910, while making his customary rounds, he encountered a volatile situation. An intoxicated man, armed with a rifle, was menacing the citizens of the town.
Without hesitation, Deputy Holmes confronted the man, intending to disarm and arrest him to restore peace.
However, in the ensuing struggle, the man fired his rifle, striking Holmes in the chest. The deputy sheriff fell, mortally wounded, his life tragically cut short in the line of duty.
The following morning, news of the killing reached the Humboldt County Sheriff. He immediately traveled to National and apprehended the suspect. Due to the palpable anger and threats of lynching from the townspeople, the sheriff wisely transported the accused to Winnemucca for his safety and to ensure a fair trial. The suspect was subsequently convicted of murder and received a life sentence. His story did not end there; he managed to escape from the Nevada Penitentiary in July of 1912, but was recaptured in Kingman, Arizona, the following January. After serving more time, he was eventually paroled in 1918. His life of crime concluded on March 5, 1919, when he was killed in an accident involving an engine he was working on.
