In the afternoon hours of Friday, November 25, 2016, a young Hispanic man named Nelson Javier Navarijo-Padilla, aged 22, was shot and killed in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fatal incident occurred around 1 p.m. inside an apartment located at 2108 Sunrise Avenue, near the intersection of Fremont Street and Eastern Avenue. When authorities arrived, Navarijo-Padilla's body was discovered lying in a walkway between two small apartment buildings.
The Clark County coroner later officially identified him and ruled his death a homicide. Law enforcement officials noted that they were familiar with Navarijo-Padilla from previous encounters and stated he had a history that involved gangs and drugs.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to an arrest, though not of the shooter. A 24-year-old woman named Porshay Banks was taken into custody in connection with the homicide. According to a witness, a gunshot was heard from within the apartment, and shortly after, a woman identified as Banks was seen dragging Navarijo-Padilla's body out the front door and leaving him on the sidewalk. Upon entering the apartment, police discovered a handgun on the living room couch, along with blood and a sponge that appeared to have been used in an attempt to clean the scene.
During questioning, Porshay Banks denied any involvement in the shooting. She claimed not to know Navarijo-Padilla and told investigators that she had been asleep in the apartment and did not hear the gunshot. Banks stated that when she woke up and left the apartment, she simply stepped over the body that was lying just outside the door. She was not suspected of being the person who fired the weapon but was arrested and charged with accessory to murder for her alleged role in moving the victim's body after he was shot. As of the reports that followed the incident, the individual responsible for the shooting had not been identified or taken into custody.
