On May 8, 2014, a tragic incident occurred in Las Vegas, Nevada, resulting in the death of 24-year-old Dan Archie. The events unfolded in the parking lot of the Heritage Estates Apartment Complex, located at 3426 Algiers Drive, near the intersection of Las Vegas and Lamb boulevards.
According to the police report, Archie and several friends, including the eventual suspect, Douglas Smalley, were gathered around a power box in front of the apartment complex.
Smalley, who had been drinking, joined the group and greeted everyone except for one individual named “Dame.” This oversight led to a confrontation between Archie and Smalley, which escalated into a physical fight.
Following the altercation, Archie left with another friend to purchase cigarettes. Upon his return to the parking lot, Smalley, still present and chatting with the other men near the power box, turned and fired multiple shots at Archie. Witnesses reported that Smalley fired between four and nine shots. Archie, who had just exited a car driven by a friend, was hit in the abdomen. Despite his injuries, Archie managed to hop through the open rear door of the car and run away, but he succumbed to his wounds shortly before midnight.
The police investigation revealed a blood trail leading from the point where Archie was shot to where his body was found on the 4300 block of Marion Drive. At the scene, authorities discovered 9mm cartridge casings and evidence of alcoholic beverages, including bottles and cans.
Douglas Smalley, aged 31 at the time of the incident, was identified as the suspect in Archie's murder. Smalley was arrested in connection with the shooting nearly a year after the incident. The arrest was made based on the evidence and witness statements that implicated Smalley in the fatal shooting. He was charged with murder and faced trial for his role in Archie's death.
