In the cold early morning hours of January 29, 2018, Brian Wayne Clegg, a 51-year-old Caucasian man, was tragically killed in Las Vegas, Nevada. Clegg, who was homeless, was shot multiple times while he slept outside the Rancho Discount Mall on West Washington Avenue. Two other people sleeping near him were unharmed and alerted the police after hearing the gunshots and fleeing the immediate area.
Clegg's death was not an isolated incident but rather part of a string of violent attacks
that targeted the city's vulnerable homeless population. The series of shootings began on the same day as Clegg's murder, with another homeless individual being shot and wounded in the face while they slept. The spree of violence continued, creating a climate of fear among those living on the streets of Las Vegas.
The investigation into these seemingly random and brutal attacks led law enforcement to identify a suspect through surveillance footage. The breakthrough came from video evidence connected to the shooting of another homeless man, James Edgar Lewis, who was killed days after Clegg. The footage captured a 2016-2018 Hyundai Tucson SUV, which was later traced to 26-year-old Joshua Emmanuel Castellon.
Following an intensive investigation, Castellon was taken into custody in February 2018. He was subsequently linked to the series of shootings that resulted in the deaths of both Brian Wayne Clegg and James Edgar Lewis, as well as the non-fatal shooting of another homeless person and the shooting of a clerk outside a store in a nearby rural area. Castellon was charged with murder and attempted murder for his role in the attacks that had terrorized the Las Vegas community.
