Robert Matthews, a 27-year-old Black male, was shot outside the Northpointe Apartments at 3333 N. Michael Way in Las Vegas after a confrontation near the complex entrance. Shortly before 10 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2014, two men arrived in a dark-colored four-door sedan, a brief argument followed, and multiple shots were fired. Matthews was found wounded on the sidewalk and rushed to University Medical Center, where he later died.
Police said he and two acquaintances had been approached moments after leaving a nearby convenience store.
Investigators initially released surveillance images and descriptions of two men sought in the case, noting both appeared to be in their 20s and that the vehicle possibly resembled a Chevy Monte Carlo with a rear spoiler and sunroof. The suspects fled after the shooting while Matthews’ acquaintances ran from the gunfire.
In April 2015, detectives’ work culminated in grand jury indictments and the arrest of Keonis Lamont Davis, 25, and Laron Kinchlow, 24. Prosecutors charged both men with murder, attempted murder, robbery, and conspiracy to commit robbery, alleging Matthews was shot and killed during an armed robbery after leaving a nearby Circle K. A police report described how the passenger stepped out with a 9mm handgun; three shots rang out, and a friend saw Matthews stagger and fall. The two defendants were ordered held without bail pending court proceedings.
Public memorial notices later gave Matthews’ life dates as March 2, 1987 to July 2, 2014, aligning with reports that he was shot late that Wednesday and died afterward at UMC.
