In the early evening of January 8, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the calm at the Harbor Island Apartments on East Harmon Avenue in Las Vegas. When the chaos subsided, two men were left wounded. One of them was 30-year-old Antwan Pope Jr., a Black / African American male. He was found by responding police officers with a gunshot wound to his head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second victim, 32-year-old Sean McLemore, was rushed to University Medical Center, but he too succumbed to his injuries. The Clark County coroner's office would later rule both deaths as homicides.
Detectives began to piece together the events of that fatal Friday. Their investigation suggested that Pope and McLemore had been involved in an altercation with another man just before the shooting. This man, described as being approximately 6-foot-4 and weighing around 210 pounds with long hair, was seen fleeing the apartment complex in a vehicle shortly after the gunshots rang out. Authorities appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the identification of the shooter.
Based on tips received from the community, police eventually identified a suspect: 39-year-old Michael Ellis. Investigators learned that Ellis had allegedly been in a dispute with McLemore concerning drugs and money, which had reportedly escalated in the days leading up to the shooting. Surveillance footage from the apartment complex placed Ellis at the scene about an hour before the deadly encounter, and he was seen leaving in a car with another individual after the incident.
Following his arrest, Michael Ellis was charged with the murders of Antwan Pope and Sean McLemore. However, the legal proceedings that followed did not result in a conviction. In March 2022, after a trial and two hours of deliberation, a jury acquitted Ellis of the murder charges. The prosecution's case was reported to have heavily relied on the testimony of a single witness, and apparent inconsistencies in that testimony, coupled with a lack of other concrete evidence, led to the not-guilty verdict. Although a suspect was arrested and tried, the deaths of Antwan Pope and Sean McLemore officially remain unsolved.
