In the early hours of July 9, 2025, the life of 22-year-old Michael Simmons Jr. was tragically cut short in a barrage of gunfire in a southwest Las Vegas neighborhood. The young man, a Black male, was a devoted father to his young daughter and a talented, licensed barber known for his generosity, often offering free haircuts to those in need.
The incident unfolded shortly after 12:38 a.m. in the garage of a residence on the 6000 block of Coja Street.
Witnesses reported seeing a white Dodge Charger with a black front bumper circling the area multiple times before the shooting. Several individuals then exited the vehicle and unleashed more than 30 rounds, with Simmons being the sole victim. Arriving officers found him with multiple gunshot wounds, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Clark County coroner's office later confirmed his cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds and ruled it a homicide.
The sudden and violent nature of his death left his family and community in profound grief. His brother described him as a "caring soul with a big heart, always putting others before himself". Friends and colleagues from the barbershop where he worked remembered him as a passionate and skilled professional. In the wake of his death, a GoFundMe campaign was established to help with funeral expenses and to support his daughter.
